Odalate
Odalate means wire. Contract workers used it as the name for the whole contract labour system: the fenced compounds, the recruiting depots, the papers that bound a man for eighteen months to an employer he never chose.
When the strikers of 1971 said they were finishing with odalate, everyone in the north knew exactly what they meant. A single word carried a complete critique of the system.
